Mais un nouveau joueur se joint à la partie : le roi de la Rivière Argentée qui, de l'eau, fait naître la plus belle de ses créations, Force Vitale. La jeune femme apporte son aide à Morgan et Walker, constituant autour d'eux un groupe assez puissant pour les mener jusqu'à la pierre elfique noire, objet de toutes les convoitises. En dépit de ses pouvoirs, Force Vitale semble cependant ignorer qu'un traître se cache parmi eux.

Trois cents ans se sont écoulés depuis l'épopée de Brin et Jair Ohmsford. La lignée des druides s'est éteinte après la mort d'Allanon et la destruction de leur forteresse. Fondée dans les Royaumes du Sud, une fédération a peu à peu étendu ses ambitions à l'ensemble des Quatre Terres. Son programme : l'éradication définitive des dernières traces de magie. Ses moyens : les questeurs, de redoutables inquisiteurs.
Le jeune Par Ohmsford, dernier héritier de l'enchantement de Shannara, devient alors le centre de toutes les attentions. La fédération veut le détruire, la résistance s'en faire un allié. Et par-delà la mort, Allanon a besoin du descendant de Shannara pour se prémunir d'un danger encore plus grand qui menace l'ensemble des Quatre Terres.
Quoique Wren, Par et Walker Boh aient accompli les quêtes que leur avait confiées le spectre d'Allanon, l'heure n'est pas au repos. Les Ombreurs ont gagné en nombre et en puissance. La maladie qu'ils répandent sur les Quatre Terres menace de ravager le monde. À leur tête, Rimmer Dall semble plus déterminé que jamais à parvenir à ses fins, et à ne surtout pas laisser les Héritiers de Shannara se mettre en travers de son chemin. Si ces derniers y succombent, les pièges machiavéliques qu'il leur tend pourraient signer l'arrêt de mort de millions de personnes...
Wren Ohmsford, de la lignée de Shannara, a quitté sa terre natale. Tout comme Par et Walker, elle a répondu à l'appel du spectre du druide Allanon, pour l'aider à préserver le monde du joug des Ombreurs. Sa mission, retrouver les elfes, n'a rien de simple, car personne ne sait où ils se cachent depuis qu'ils ont quitté leur citadelle cent ans plus tôt. Personne sauf la Vipère-harpie, ce puits de sagesse des Terres de l'Ouest. Sur ses conseils, Wren, accompagnée de son mentor Garth, se rend sur le rivage de la ligne de partage bleue, où l'attend une difficile épreuve. Pour trouver les elfes, elle devra apprendre à maîtriser les pierres elfiques, qu'elle craint plus que tout...
